Saint Gaudiosus, in particular, retired to Naples after fleeing Vandal persecutions in Africa. Their remains were later transferred to the church of San Gaudioso and San Gennaro all’Olmo, and the oratory, with the adjacent cemetery, was buried by a landslide.

In the 16th century, Clemente Panariello brought the area back to light, building a rural house there. One of his descendants transformed the remains of the ancient church into a modest cellar. Legend has it that, despite the transformation, an image of the Madonna with the Saints miraculously remained visible on the wall. In 1569, a devastating flood destroyed the cellar, causing the death of its inhabitants. The following year, an heir, inspired by faith, decided to honor the image of the Virgin, first erecting a shrine with a perpetual lamp, then an altar, and finally a proper church. The sanctuary was solemnly reopened for worship in 1570 by order of Archbishop Mario Carafa, restoring to the citizens a fundamental place of worship.

Papal Indulgences and Ecclesiastical Recognitions

Paul V granted the same indulgences as the altars of the ancient cemetery to the third chapel to the left of the high altar. Innocent XIII further elevated the prestige of the Sanctuary, including the church of Sanità among the seven churches to which he granted the indulgence of the seven Roman basilicas, a tangible sign of the importance and spiritual value of this sacred place for the Christian community.
