The history of the sanctuary is inextricably linked to the figure of Panacea De’ Muzzi, a young shepherdess of just fifteen years, born in Ghemme and living in the 14th century. Tradition tells that Panacea, orphaned by her mother, suffered abuse and mistreatment from her stepmother. One day in May 1383 (the first Friday of the month), the stepmother, enraged to find her absorbed in prayer instead of tending to the flock, brutally killed her on Mount Tucri, striking her with a distaff and spindles. Her death is seen as a martyrdom, and the sanctuary was built precisely on the site of her sacrifice.

Although there are no written documents that definitively attest to the year of its foundation, tradition dates it back to 1409. The first certain written testimony is dated October 14, 1540, and concerns a testamentary bequest that required the community of Quarona to celebrate two annual masses: one on the eve of the Blessed’s feast and the other on its octave.

Art and Architecture: A Journey Through the Centuries

The sanctuary has undergone several transformations over the centuries. In 1632, it passed from the parish of San Giovanni to that of Sant’Antonio Abate in Quarona. In 1663, the original structure was expanded according to the canons of Valsesian Baroque, an intervention that, unfortunately, led to the loss of the original 15th-century frescoes. In 1763, the painter Lorenzo Peracino created a new cycle of frescoes on the vault walls, giving the sanctuary the appearance we admire today.

In the 18th century, along the path connecting the ancient parish church of San Giovanni on the Mountain to the oratory, votive chapels were built, frescoed with scenes from Panacea’s life and martyrdom. The original frescoes, deteriorated over time, were redone in 1975 by the painter Ermanno Zamboni, who adhered to the traditional iconography of the Blessed, depicting her with rustic simplicity.

Inside the sanctuary, a stone stained with the blood of the Blessed is kept, a relic highly venerated by the faithful. A place of prayer where one can find peace and spiritual reflection.
