  • Blessed Virgin of Fognana

In 1752, the construction of a new oratory was completed, with the contribution of many devotees, including Count Alessandro Naldi, who donated the land from his property called Burano for the erection of the small church, sacristy, and cemetery. Thus arose the small church of Fognana, officially named the Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of Hope. The 18th century also saw the addition of the scagliola altar (donated by the Naldi family) and the processional residence. Today, the terracotta Madonna is housed in a silver residence, adorned with friezes and Eucharistic symbols, commissioned in the second half of the last century by parish priest Giovanni Laghi. The flower stand, attributed to the Faenza silversmith Giovanni Baccarini, was recently restored by Gaetano Marzocchi. Description: Polychrome terracotta, 27×20 cm, in bas-relief limited to the iconography from a mold and in high relief for the elements identifying the ex-voto. Rectangular in shape with a multi-corded frame, it depicts the Virgin half-length, covered with a mantle, bareheaded with flowing hair over her shoulders, holding the naked Child in her arms, both with halos and united in mutual embrace. At the top sides, two cherubs and slightly below, two daisies. At the bottom right, inserted in the cord, the kneeling miracle recipient in an act of supplication, with a jug seen from above next to it, inserted in the cord, the fountain. The iconographic model derives from Tuscan schemes of the Robbian school dating back to the 15th century. The date and author are unknown, but the work reveals sculpting skill. Datable between the second half of the 16th and the first half of the 17th century. Entered into use: in the year 1664 Image: Other
Type of ex-votos: Painted tablets, Jewelry objects Reference to publications or printed descriptions: Borghesi Stefano and Castellari Giuliano (eds.), The Cult of the B.V. of Fognana in Tebano, Castel Bolognese, Grafica Artigiana, 1994.

The first news of this devotion comes from a notarial act, dating back to 1664 (Notarial Archive of Faenza, vol 3157) which explicitly refers to the small cell of Santa Maria, called the Fugnana, erected in the field of Martino Pisotti and to the offerings of the faithful, collected there, intended to settle the debt contracted by the society of the Holy Sacrament of Santa Maria di Tebano for the purchase of some plots of land owned by Pisotti (cf S. Borghesi, 8). After the Second World War, having fallen into disuse, the image was placed a few years ago on the left altar of the church of Tebano, which since 1986 has been merged with the parish of San Pietro Apostolo in Biancanigo. On September 13, 1992, a small pillar was inaugurated at the place of origin of the cult, where the remains of the well near which the miracle occurred still exist, as recalled by the attached epigraph: The community of Tebano placed this small pillar near the source of the miraculous healing of 1685 as a sign of gratitude for the many graces received from the B.V. of Fognana.
