Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Graces: A Treasure of Faith and History in Berceto

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Graces, located in the picturesque village of Berceto, in the province of Parma, represents an important place of worship and a custodian of centuries of history and popular devotion. Its simple architecture, made of worked stone, encloses a deep spiritual soul, linked to the veneration of a sacred image of the Virgin Mary.

The Sacred Image: Between History and Legend

Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Graces - Image of the Virgin with Child

The beating heart of the sanctuary is the terracotta image of the Virgin with the Child, kept in a polychrome marble niche. It is believed that this precious effigy comes from the ancient church of Santa Maria dell’hospitium della Cisa, a place of welcome for pilgrims crossing the Apennines. The arrival of the image in Berceto is shrouded in legend: it is said to have been transported by a cart pulled by oxen, left free to choose its destination, which stopped right at the pilgrims’ hospital in Berceto.

However, a more rational explanation suggests that the transfer may have occurred following the hospital reform of the second half of the 15th century, which led to the unification of the hospitals in the diocese of Parma. To preserve the veneration of the simulacrum, it would have been moved to the church of the hospital in Berceto, which was renovated starting in 1467.

    From Tradition to Official Recognition

Despite centuries of veneration, the formal recognition of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie as a sanctuary occurred only on June 27, 1924. A further sign of Marian devotion is the statue of the Madonna delle Grazie, inaugurated on September 13, 1925, and since then carried in procession. This testimony of popular faith is also manifested through a collection of ex-votos, a tangible expression of the gratitude of the faithful for the graces received.

A Sanctuary, Many Stories: The Saints and Beyond

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Graces is steeped in history and significant figures. Among these, the figure of Saint Luigi Guanella, founder of the Servants of Charity and the Daughters of Santa Maria della Provvidenza, stands out. Although not directly linked to the foundation of the sanctuary, the Guanellian order has operated in Berceto, leaving a mark of charity and service. Delving into the life of Saint Luigi Guanella can offer a broader perspective on the spirituality and social commitment that animate these places.
