Fresco of the Madonna with Child, Saint Anthony Abbot, and Saint Maurice

The fresco depicts the Madonna seated on a throne, wrapped in a red mantle lined with green and dressed in yellow. On her lap rests the Child Jesus, standing in a green robe with a flower in his hands. His gaze is directed towards Saint Anthony Abbot, standing to her right in dark robes, holding a staff, a book, and a bell, symbols of his hermitic life and his struggle against temptations.

To the left of the Virgin, we find Saint Maurice, dressed in a red doublet and black hose, a cloak lined with white, and holding two white flags and a red cross. Saint Maurice, commander of the Theban Legion, is venerated as a martyr for his unwavering faith and refusal to sacrifice to pagan gods. His presence in the fresco underscores the values of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice that characterize the sanctuary.

History and Devotion: A Centuries-Old Journey

The roots of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Campagna date back to the first half of the 15th century, when an oratory dedicated to the Virgin stood on the same site, under the patronage of the Lamberti family. In 1540, the “Schola Sanctae Mariae,” a local confraternity, undertook the ambitious project of expanding the building, definitively acquiring its patronage in 1547. This community of faithful played a crucial role in the growth and development of the sanctuary, promoting Marian devotion and caring for the sacred place.

The church was solemnly consecrated in 1593 by Bishop Niguarda, officially establishing its role as a center of spirituality and devotion. The bishop also had the responsibility of confirming the beneficial, the priest appointed to officiate in the sanctuary, nominated by the patrons.
