Sanctuary of Christ the King: Faith, Art, and History in the Heart of Val Camonica

Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Val Camonica, in the province of Brescia, stands the Sanctuary of Christ the King, a place of deep spirituality and artistic admiration. A plaque placed beneath the monument bears the inscription: “Christo Regi Redemptori / Vallis Cammunia / Dicavit,” a testament to Val Camonica’s dedication to Christ the King Redeemer.

History and Devotion

The idea of erecting a monument to Christ the King in Val Camonica emerged in the 1920s, during a period of religious fervor and a desire to affirm Christian faith. The statue was inaugurated in 1930, quickly becoming an important pilgrimage site and a place of devotion for the valley’s inhabitants and faithful from across Italy.

In 1934, beneath the statue, a crypt was created, its walls adorned with plaques bearing the names of the main benefactors and supporters of the project. At the center of the crypt is a large crucifix with figures of Saint John and the Virgin Mary, creating an environment of prayer and meditation.

In 1979, the sanctuary celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the statue’s erection with a solemn ceremony and a complete restoration of the monument, testifying to the enduring vitality of faith and devotion to Christ the King in Val Camonica. The project was strongly supported by Bishop Giacinto Tredici and received the patronage of prominent figures such as Pope Pius XI and King Victor Emmanuel III.
