In 1439, Giacomo Caldora, a condottiero in the service of the Angevins, threatened to sack Colle Sannita, a fiefdom of the Della Leonessa family, loyal to the Aragonese.

Tradition recounts that on November 15 of the same year, while Caldora was preparing for the siege, he died suddenly. The inhabitants of Colle Sannita, interpreting the event as a divine intervention, erected the sanctuary as a sign of gratitude for having been liberated from the sack. The Madonna della Libera thus became the protector of the community.
