Countryside Church of the Virgin of Graces: A Spiritual Gem in the Heart of Sardinia
SP5, Escolca (Cagliari): A Sanctuary to Discover

Nestled in the evocative landscape of Sarcidano, Sardinia, stands the countryside church of the Virgin of Graces, a place of faith and history that invites reflection and discovery. Located in the territory of Escolca, in the province of Cagliari, this church represents an important landmark for the local community and a hidden treasure for visitors.
Exploring the Church of the Virgin of Graces: Description and History
Unfortunately, the church currently faces precarious structural conditions. The building, originally a single nave, is constructed with load-bearing stone masonry. A triumphal arch marks the transition between the nave and the altar area. Sadly, the roof has partially collapsed, but restoration work is underway to restore this sacred place to its former glory.
On the exterior, semi-pillars can be seen along the walls of the nave, added later to support the iron roof. The interior of the church was originally plastered, and traces of simple decorations and painted stones can still be glimpsed on the triumphal arch, evidence of a past rich in art and devotion. The gabled facade, with its splayed portal, remains in good condition and continues to inspire admiration among visitors.
The Statue of the Virgin of Graces: A Symbol of Devotion
The beating heart of this sanctuary is the statue of the Virgin of Graces, a wooden sculpture dressed in white garments and a sky-blue mantle. The exact date of its creation remains uncertain, but it is believed to date back to the period when the church was rededicated. Due to the precarious state of the sanctuary, the statue is currently housed in the parish of Santa Cecilia in Escolca, awaiting the church’s restoration.
The historical significance of the church is attested by an inscription on the bell, dated 1579: “Santa Maria de bineas della Villa de Escroca, anno Domini MDLXXVIIII.” This reminds us that between the 1500s and 1599, the church was already an active and revered place of worship for the local community.
Historically, the church was entrusted to the care of the Trinitarian Fathers during the 17th century. However, following the suppression of the order, pastoral responsibility first passed to the parish of the Virgin of Graces and then to the parish of Santa Cecilia in Escolca, to which it still belongs today. The suppression of the Trinitarian Fathers’ convent occurred by royal decree on December 14, 1767, and by papal brief on April 27, 1776, with its revenues being transferred to the convent of San Lucifero in Cagliari.
