Discover the Eucharistic Miracle of Ferrara: the Blood on the Vault of Santa Maria in Vado

In the heart of Ferrara’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, the Basilica of Santa Maria in Vado guards one of the oldest and best documented Eucharistic miracles in Italy: on Easter morning 1171, a jet of blood sprang from the broken Host and spattered the small vault above the altar. Those stains, after more than 850 years, are still visible.

On 28 March 1171, Easter Sunday, Prior Pietro da Verona was celebrating Mass in the ancient church of Santa Maria del Vado, assisted by several confrères. At the moment of the fraction of the consecrated Host, before the astonished eyes of those present, a jet of living blood sprang from the Host and reached the small vault above the altar, sprinkling it with crimson drops. Amato, Bishop of Ferrara, hastened to verify the prodigy together with Gherardo, Archbishop of Ravenna.

The Little Vault of the Prodigy

The small blood-stained vault immediately became an object of veneration. When, at the end of the fifteenth century, the church was rebuilt in its present Renaissance form at the behest of Ercole I d’Este, the little vault was jealously preserved and incorporated into the new temple: it stands today in the right transept, within the monumental Shrine of the Most Precious Blood, where pilgrims can climb up to observe the stains at close quarters.

A Devotion Eight and a Half Centuries Long

The miracle of Ferrara is attested by papal bulls, city chronicles and an unbroken liturgical tradition. The basilica, served for centuries by the Canons Regular and today by the Missionaries of the Most Precious Blood, is one of the most significant “churches of the blood” in Europe and an essential stop on any Italian Eucharistic itinerary.
