Discover the Eucharistic Miracle of Mogoro: the Imprints of the Hosts in the Stone

In the heart of Sardinia, among the hills of the Marmilla, the town of Mogoro guards the island’s only Eucharistic miracle: the imprints left in 1604 by two consecrated Hosts that fell onto the floor of the church of San Bernardino, impressed into the stone like an indelible seal.

Easter Monday 1604

On Easter Monday 1604, Don Salvatore Spiga, parish priest of the church of San Bernardino, was celebrating Mass and, after the consecration, began to distribute Communion to the faithful. According to the account handed down by the historian Pietro Maria Cossu, two men in a state of mortal sin approached the sacrament unworthily: as they were about to receive them, the two Hosts fell to the ground and — before those present — left their imprints impressed in the stone of the floor, as though branded by fire.

The Stone of the Imprints

The slab marked by the imprints of the two Hosts was kept with veneration and became the centre of Mogoro’s devotion. Still today the visitor can observe the stone of the miracle, material testimony of an event the community has never forgotten and which local historians have carefully documented.

The Procession of Reparation

Because of that prodigious event, and in reparation for the sacrilegious act, every year on the Sunday after Easter (Low Sunday) Mogoro celebrates a solemn Eucharistic procession: the Blessed Sacrament passes through the streets of the town amid the carpets and textiles of Mogoro’s artisan tradition, in a feast that weaves together faith and Sardinian identity.
