Discover the Eucharistic Miracle of Morrovalle: the Host Intact amid the Ashes of the Fire

On the hills of the Macerata countryside, the village of Morrovalle commemorates a prodigy officially recognised by a pope: on the night between 16 and 17 April 1560 a violent fire destroyed the church of the Franciscan convent, yet among the smoking ruins the consecrated Host kept in the tabernacle was found perfectly intact.

The Night of the Fire

The fire blazed up in the night and within a few hours reduced the church of the Friars Minor to ashes: the roof collapsed, the altars were destroyed, the wooden tabernacle burned completely. When the friars and the townspeople were finally able to dig through the ruins, they made the discovery that would mark the history of the village: beneath the rubble, the pyx had been melted by the heat, but the consecrated Host it contained had remained white and intact, resting as though on a little throne of debris.

The Recognition of Pius IV

News quickly reached Rome. Pope Pius IV, after ordering canonical investigations into the event, recognised its prodigious character and granted indulgences to pilgrims visiting the site of the miracle: one of the rare cases of a Eucharistic miracle sanctioned by a papal pronouncement so soon after the facts.

Morrovalle Today

The walled village of Morrovalle, with its lanes and squares overlooking the Chienti valley, preserves the memory of the prodigy in its church and in the celebrations which every April renew the community’s gratitude. The Franciscan convent, site of the miracle, remains the spiritual heart of this story.
