The Eucharistic Miracle of Saint Clare and the Power of Faith

Nestled in the tranquility of the Umbrian countryside, just outside the walls of Assisi, stands one of the most mystical and captivating sites of Christianity: the San Damiano Sanctuary. This ancient Franciscan church and convent is deeply tied to two great saints: Saint Francis of Assisi, who received his calling here, and Saint Clare, the protagonist of a famous Eucharistic miracle that continues to inspire faith and devotion to this day.
📍 Where is the San Damiano Sanctuary Located?
Located southeast of Assisi’s historic center, the San Damiano Sanctuary is easily accessible on foot via a scenic path starting from Porta Nuova. Surrounded by olive trees, the site offers a breathtaking view of the valley below, making it ideal for spiritual reflection and meditation.
✝️ The Eucharistic Miracle of Saint Clare

The miracle occurred during one of the Saracen raids in the 13th century (in 1240), when mercenary troops hired by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia threatened Assisi and advanced as far as the San Damiano Monastery, then home to Saint Clare and her sisters.
According to the Legend of Saint Clare the Virgin, written by Thomas of Celano, the soldiers entered the nuns’ cloister, spreading panic and terror. The sisters, overcome with fear, turned to their spiritual mother. Though gravely ill, Clare of Assisi had herself carried to the convent entrance and asked for the Blessed Sacrament, kept in a precious silver and ivory case, to be brought to her.

With deep faith and courage, Saint Clare knelt before the Eucharist and prayed:
“Behold, my Lord, will You perhaps deliver Your defenseless handmaids, whom I have nurtured for Your love, into the hands of pagans? Protect them, I pray, Lord, for I cannot save them alone.”
From the monstrance came a clear and sweet voice, like that of a child:
“I will always protect you!”
Immediately, a sense of fear and confusion seized the attackers, who hastily abandoned the monastery. The danger was averted thanks to Clare’s unshakable faith and prayer, and from that day on, she was seen as a miraculous protector.

🕊️ A Place of Apparitions, Conversion, and Silent Wonder
San Damiano is not just a historical site but a true place of the spirit. Here, Saint Francis prayed intensely when he heard the voice of the Crucifix saying to him:
“Francis, go and repair my house, which, as you see, is falling into ruin.”
This event marked the turning point in his life. The crumbling little church became Francis’s first concrete mission, and from there, the Franciscan movement began. Later, it was Saint Clare, his spiritual disciple, who received it as the home of her order.
