Back home, she threw the Host into a pan of boiling oil, as though to fry it: and the Host turned into living flesh, bleeding so abundantly that the blood spread through the house. Terrified, the woman confessed her sacrilege, and the miraculous flesh was gathered by the city’s clergy amid general emotion.

The prodigy is kept in the church of Sant’Andrea, where the relic — fragments of the miraculous flesh — is preserved in a precious silver case and exposed for veneration on special occasions. For almost a thousand years the community of Trani has handed down the memory of the event, one of the oldest of its kind in Europe.
