A Discreet Architecture, a Profound Heart

The exterior of the hermitage, deliberately simple, almost blends with the rocky wall that supports it, not far from Pretara, along the course of the Ruzzo stream. The four small domes of the church, shyly hidden between the roof and the rock, reveal the sanctity of the place only to the most attentive eyes. A staircase leads from the road to the side entrance, opposite which a cross erected near a small cave welcomes the visitor.

Crossing the threshold, a narrow corridor opens into the church, the beating heart of the hermitage. To the right of the entrance, two small irregular rooms lead to the presbytery area. The interior of the church surprises with a chapel at the back and two side chapels, each with its own altar, creating an intimate and evocative atmosphere. A glass cabinet on the right side holds sacred objects, while a small door leads to the last room, once a cloister and small chamber, now a testament to a simple and austere monastic life.

Fra’ Nicola da Isola: The Hermit of Gran Sasso

The history of the Eremo di Fratta Grande is inextricably linked to Fra’ Nicola da Isola, a prominent figure of the 19th century. Born into a humble family, Fra’ Nicola felt the call to the hermitic life from a young age, dedicating himself to prayer, penance, and service to the most needy. It was he who built the hermitage around the mid-19th century, transforming a cave into a place of worship and spiritual refuge.

Thanks to the testimonies of Fedele Romani and popular tales, we know of Fra’ Nicola’s deep devotion to Saint Francis of Paola, to whom a painting on the main altar of the hermitage is dedicated. Beyond the construction of the Eremo di Fratta Grande, Fra’ Nicola was known for restoring several churches in the area, including San Nicola and Santa Colomba, and for rebuilding the sanctuaries of Santa Maria a Pagliara and San Cassiano. He also founded the Confraternity of Saint Francis of Paola, a sign of his social and spiritual commitment.

Fra’ Nicola’s remains are now kept in the church of San Francesco di Paola, inside the cave of Fratta Grande, a destination for pilgrimage and veneration. In 1986, on the centenary of his death, the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso placed a commemorative plaque on the rocky wall near the hermitage’s entrance, in memory of the last hermit of Gran Sasso.
