The Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca, located in Vobarno, in the province of Brescia, is a place of deep spirituality and rich history, dominating the entire Val Sabbia with its presence. A refuge for the soul, a point of reference for the faithful, and a silent witness to centuries of Marian devotion.

A Work of Art That Safeguards Faith

The heart of the sanctuary is preserved within: a painting of the Madonna with Child. This work, signed and dated Paulus Farinatus MDLXXV (1575), reveals the skill of one of the disciples of the renowned Veronese painter. The sacred image, rich in meaning and expressiveness, depicts the Virgin Mary who, from the heights of the Rocca, watches over the valley below with care, offering protection and comfort to its inhabitants.

History and Transformations of a Sacred Place

The history of the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca is steeped in complex and fascinating events. Originally, the Rocca of Vobarno served a defensive function. However, after being destroyed in 1362 following the anti-Visconti revolt of the valley dwellers, the fortress underwent a significant transformation. Starting in 1440, thanks to the concession of Doge Francesco Foscari, the municipalities of the Riviera obtained permission to rebuild the destroyed fortresses and castles. Instead of returning to its military function, the Rocca of Vobarno was converted into a sanctuary, a place of prayer and encounter with the divine.

The first documented mention of the church of the Rocca dates back to a pastoral visit on October 2, 1566. This historical fact testifies to the importance the sanctuary had acquired in the religious life of the local community by the end of the 16th century.

The Sanctuary and the Community of Vobarno

From its origins, the sanctuary has been closely tied to the community of Vobarno. Wished for and administered by the community itself, the sanctuary remained communal property for four centuries before passing to the parish benefit. This communal management reflects the strong sense of belonging and deep devotion of the inhabitants of Vobarno to the Madonna della Rocca.

A pastoral visit in 1566 reports that “this Church or Chapel is under the patronage of the municipality, and the alms given to the church are dispensed by the municipality for the upkeep of the Church.” This historical document highlights the central role of the municipality in the administration and maintenance of the sanctuary. The communal patronage ended in 1823, marking a new phase in the history of the sacred place.

A Place of Faith, Art, and… Adventure?

Beyond its religious and artistic value, the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca also offers opportunities for a more adventurous discovery experience. Its elevated position provides a breathtaking panorama of Val Sabbia. The hike to reach the sanctuary can be an opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty of the surrounding nature and enjoy rare scenic views.
Although there are no “hidden treasures” in the strict sense, the history of the sanctuary, linked to the events of the Rocca and the valley, might conceal anecdotes and curiosities to be discovered through research in local archives or through oral traditions passed down by the population.

    Devotion and Spirituality

The Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca invites contemplation and prayer. As a Catholic place of worship, it offers the opportunity to participate in liturgical celebrations and experience moments of intimate communion with God. The presence of the Madonna, depicted in the main painting, instills a sense of protection and hope in the hearts of the faithful.

Saints and Key Figures: Although not directly linked to its foundation, popular devotion in the Brescia area is rich in figures such as Saint Angela Merici, patroness of Brescia, and Saint John the Baptist, patron of several localities in Val Sabbia. Their intercession is often invoked alongside that of the Madonna for graces and protection.

Collection of Ex-Votos: Unfortunately, there is currently no data available regarding the collection of ex-votos inside the sanctuary. It would be interesting to explore this aspect further to better understand the graces received and the popular devotion tied to the place.

The liturgical building was restored and modified after the end of the Second World War, to better accommodate the faithful and preserve its beauty.
