Nestled in the heart of Basilicata, the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sauro is a place of deep spirituality, rich in history and legends. This sanctuary, a destination for centuries-old pilgrimages, offers a unique experience, combining Marian devotion with the discovery of a fascinating territory.

The Sanctuary’s History: Ancient Roots and Rebirth

The origins of the sanctuary are lost in the mists of time. Documents from the 11th century mention a church existing between Gorgoglione and the Sauro Valley, suggesting an even older origin. Although there is no definitive documentary evidence of the sanctuary’s medieval roots, the dating of the revered Marian sculpture to the 14th century supports this hypothesis.

The current single-nave building is the result of a reconstruction in 1902, following the devastation caused by the earthquake of December 1857. Today, the sanctuary features a single nave, a side structure, a prominent bell tower, and a series of buttresses supporting its structure.

The Wooden Statue: A Treasure of Faith and Art

The heart of the sanctuary is the 14th-century polychrome wooden statue, depicting the Virgin enthroned with the Child on her lap. The sculpture, with its archaic and Byzantine-inspired iconography, shows the Virgin in long robes, in a frontal and static pose. The Child, seated on the Mother’s lap, raises his right hand in a blessing gesture. The throne’s armrests are adorned with two spheres, adding a touch of elegance to the artwork.

The founding of the sanctuary is shrouded in a captivating legend, preserved in a manuscript in the diocesan archives of Tricarico. It is said that, in medieval times, some farmers witnessed the apparition of the Virgin on a cart pulled by oxen with stone wheels. These wheels, considered sacred relics, were kept for a long time in front of the chapel, as a reminder of the miraculous event.

According to different versions of the legend, the apparition moved the lord of the Guardia castle to build the sanctuary at his own expense, commissioning the wooden statue that reproduced the image of the Virgin who had appeared. In another variant, it is said that the people themselves built the sanctuary, driven by faith and gratitude for the miracle they had received.

Saints and Devotion: A Deep Spiritual Bond

From its origins, the sanctuary has been a place of profound Marian devotion. The spiritual care of the sanctuary was entrusted to the church of St. Nicholas of Bari, a saint deeply venerated in Basilicata. The presence of St. Nicholas underscores the importance of the sanctuary as a center of faith and prayer for the local community.

Although no other saints directly linked to the sanctuary are specified in this text, it is important to remember that every Marian sanctuary is intrinsically connected to the figure of Mary, Mother of Jesus, and thus shares in the holiness derived from her union with the Divine.

Useful Information for Visitors

After 1727, the sanctuary became the property of the parish church of Guardia Perticara. During the pastoral visit of 1727, the Bishop of Tricarico, Mons. Nicola Carafa, described it as a benefice of free collation, with a procurator appointed by the abbot for the material care of the place. Today, the sanctuary remains an important landmark for the local community and a welcoming place for pilgrims.

Today, the sanctuary does not collect ex-votos but remains a precious treasure of faith and history.
