In an era when travel was a perilous adventure, this shelter provided refuge and respite to wayfarers traversing the rugged mountain paths.
Over time, the hospice and sanctuary declined, becoming a simple ecclesiastical benefice in the first half of the 16th century. However, popular devotion never entirely faded. From the late 19th century onward, the new owners of the former benefice’s properties were required to maintain an inn and, during the summer months, a chaplain for pastoral care, under the supervision of the parish priest of Pinzolo.
A significant event that helped revive the sanctuary’s fame was its patronage by the Habsburg imperial family during the summer months in the late 19th century. This brought prestige to the site and contributed to transforming Madonna di Campiglio into a renowned tourist destination, first as a summer retreat and later as a winter resort.
The sanctuary’s history is marked by notable figures, including the Bishops of Trent Corrado di Beseno (1198–1205) and Federico Wanga (1207–1218), Enrico II (1276), and Wolfger, Patriarch of Aquileia (before 1222), who granted confirmations and privileges to the place of worship. In 1709, the priory’s assets were transferred to the cathedral chapter, marking another milestone in the sanctuary’s long history.
