Legend has it that, following this disaster, the miraculous image of the Madonna—depicting the Virgin seated, presenting the Child to St. John the Baptist, with St. Joseph present—was found on an elder tree. The image, originally painted on paper, was transferred to Villanova Marchesana in the province of Rovigo, under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Ravenna. The Sanctuary, as we know it today, is the result of more recent history. In 1957, the local community purchased land with the intention of erecting a new sanctuary worthy of housing the revered image. This date marks a significant moment in the sanctuary’s history, a new beginning for Marian devotion in the area.
