Madonna dell’Aiuto Sanctuary: Faith, History, and Miracles in the Heart of Friuli

    Statue of Madonna dell'Aiuto

Welcome to the Madonna dell’Aiuto Sanctuary, a place of deep spirituality and rich history located in Corno di Rosazzo, Friuli. This sanctuary, dear to the hearts of the faithful, is not only a place of prayer but also a silent witness to centuries of faith, devotion, and miraculous events.

A Sanctuary Born from Popular Devotion

The origins of the sanctuary are lost in the mists of time, shrouded in a legend that tells of a statue of the Madonna arriving miraculously through the waters of the Corno stream, stopping near the village—precisely where she wished to be venerated. This evocative story, similar to other founding legends of Friuli, highlights the central role of divine will in choosing the sacred site.

Expansions and Transformations Over the Centuries

Thanks to the valuable Historical Notes of Don Gregorio Lodolo, parish priest of Corno between 1881 and 1915, we know that the oratory was expanded multiple times due to the generosity of the faithful. A significant moment was in 1760, when donations allowed for the construction of a marble altar, intended to house the statue of the Madonna.

In 1838, the growing influx of devotees required further expansion, carried out by Giuseppe Cabassi of Corno, with the addition of an external colonnade and a porch. The bell gable was replaced with a proper bell tower, completed in 1922, giving the sanctuary the appearance we admire today.

Saints and History: A Deep Connection

The history of Corno di Rosazzo is closely tied to the figure of Saint Paul the Apostle, the patron saint of the town. Devotion to Saint Paul dates back to the Roman period, when Aquileia was an important center for the spread of Christianity. The feast of Saint Paul, celebrated on January 25, is a time of great participation and devotion for the local community.

Another significant element is the connection with the Benedictine Abbey of Rosazzo, which for centuries exercised its spiritual jurisdiction over the parish of Corno. The Carinthian Patriarch Voldarico of Eppenstein, around 1090, elevated the Augustinian monastery to an abbey, granting privileges and donations. In the 13th century, the abbey reached its peak, extending its influence over numerous towns in Istria and the Isonzo Valley. Pope Innocent IV, in 1245, declared the monastery independent and placed it under the direct protection of the Holy See. The Abbot of Rosazzo gained authority and functions equal to those of a bishop, governing with a civil administrator.

Miracles and Devotion: The Cholera Epidemic of 1836

A miraculous event forever binds the Sanctuary to popular faith. In 1836, a cholera epidemic devastated the region but miraculously spared the inhabitants of Corno. In gratitude, the community requested and obtained solemn services for a decade, enriched by a plenary indulgence granted by Pope Gregory XVI.

A Treasury of Faith: The Ex-Votos

A tangible testament to the faith and gratitude of the faithful, the sanctuary houses a precious collection of ex-votos. Of a long series, only six figurative ex-votos remain today, dating from the 18th century to 1953. In addition to painted plaques, around forty votive hearts, embroideries, and more recent dedications are preserved. Among the types of ex-votos present are inscribed tablets or plaques, painted tablets, and goldsmith objects.
