  • Madonna of Mercy in St. Mary Magdalene

The Church of the Madonna della Misericordia is located within the ancient village of Sant’Angelo in Colle.
Externally, it features a stone gabled facade with a triangular pediment and a brick portal with a semicircular lunette.
The interior consists of a single nave with a semi-octagonal apse, covered by a semi-dome.
The large space is topped by a gabled roof with a wooden and brick ceiling.
Inside, there is a painting attributed to Ambrogio Lorenzetti depicting the “Virgin and Child.” The church was begun in 1889 to house the panel of the so-called “Madonna della Misericordia,” which had been kept in the Church of San Pietro since 1760. The construction took a long time and was completed in 1909, while the sacristy and bell tower were built in 1935. The altar of the Madonna, after restorations in the 18th century, was moved from the center to the left side of the church, and a crucifix was placed in its original position. No information is available about the previous structure of the sanctuary; the current building is in the shape of a Latin cross with a gabled roof.

**1889–1909** (construction of the entire property)

The church was begun in 1889 to house the panel of the so-called Madonna della Misericordia, which had been kept in the Church of San Pietro since 1760. The construction took a long time and was completed in 1909.

The church, documented since the 12th century, became a place of worship during the stops of pilgrims traveling the Via Francigena. Near the church, there is a now-abandoned castle that once hosted the faithful on their way to San Pietro. The church is located between the dioceses of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza and Siena-Colle-Montalcino, making it a border church: its role was to ensure the loyalty of its citizens to their respective dioceses. The sanctuary-style devotion to the Madonna della Misericordia developed only in the first half of the 15th century.

    **Partial indulgence of 300 days.**

In a bull issued by Pope Honorius III on December 20, 1216, addressed to Abbot Ugo of the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, it was confirmed that the legal authority of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena belonged to the abbey. However, it is certain that this assignment was never respected, as the church has always maintained its own autonomy, referring to the Diocese of Montalcino.

Since 1964, the confraternity has had ties with the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and the Diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza.
