Historical Notes: From Origins to the Renaissance
The history of the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Muris dates back to the distant 14th century. A document dated April 6, 1367, attests to the existence of a small Marian sanctuary, the earliest reference to the church of Santa Maria di Muris. The locality of Muris is linked to Aquileia and mentioned in Lombard documents as part of donations to the female monastery of Salt. Later documents record bequests to the church and its Fraterna from the 14th century onward.
The original building, likely from the 16th century, suffered severe damage during the French occupation in 1809 when it was used as a gunpowder store. It was demolished, and the sanctuary was rebuilt starting in 1828 thanks to contributions from 37 nearby towns, including Percoto. The work was completed in 1847. In 1849, once the altar was finished, the statue of the Madonna from the parish church of Percoto was placed there. The church was consecrated in 1909.
