Madonna d’Ogliastra Sanctuary: A Marian Heart in the Heart of Sardinia

Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Ogliastra, Sardinia, stands the Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna d’Ogliastra, a beacon of faith and Marian devotion. This sacred place, fervently desired by Bishop Monsignor Basoli, embodies the profound spirituality and filial love that the local population holds for the Virgin Mary.

Architecture and Symbolism

Designed in the 1950s with modern geometric lines, the sanctuary takes the form of a Latin cross. The façade, clad in gray granite, is adorned with a vertical band of light brick-colored stone, intended to house an image of the Madonna. A porch with granite pillars and a tiled roof runs along the façade. The original design also included a bell tower on the left side of the building.

The Statue of the Madonna: An Icon of Faith

Inside the sanctuary, the statue of the Madonna d’Ogliastra is venerated. Created in 1947 by sculptor Giuseppe Stufflesser with the collaboration of Eugenio Obletter, the Virgin, draped in a white robe and blue mantle, holds the Child Jesus in her arms. Both are crowned with golden crowns. The Madonna, with her right foot, crushes the head of the serpent clutching an apple in its jaws, symbolizing the victory over original sin.

History and Devotion

The history of the Madonna d’Ogliastra Sanctuary is inextricably linked to the deep Marian devotion rooted in the Ogliastra region. The presence of numerous churches dedicated to Mary, some dating back to the Middle Ages and the modern era, attests to the centuries-old Marian faith of the area. Monsignor Lorenzo Basoli wanted to erect this sanctuary as a tangible sign of this devotion.

Since its inauguration in 1979, the sanctuary has been under episcopal jurisdiction. Spiritual care has been entrusted to the Capuchin Friars since January 11, 1979. The Pious Association of the Madonna d’Ogliastra aims to promote devotion to the Madonna in the diocese and to maintain the sanctuary’s decorum.

Treasures of Faith: Ex-Votos and Precious Gifts

Inside the sanctuary, kept by the Capuchin Fathers in a small room adjacent to the sacristy, are numerous ex-votos and goldsmithing items, testaments to the gratitude and faith of the devotees. These gifts, ranging from votive lights to various objects and photographs, represent an invaluable heritage of stories of received graces and answered prayers.
