A pivotal date in the Sanctuary’s history is 1214. According to tradition, in that year, Saint Dominic, on his way to Fermo, stopped before the Madonna’s shrine and preached to the local inhabitants for the first time. This event is commemorated by an inscription preserved in the sacristy:

“Haec Dei Parae Icon, Ante Quam S. Dominicus Firmanos Primum Alloquens Benefice Erga Firmum Sanctitate Praelusit Anno Domini MCCXIV. Haec Incauta Sclopii Displosione Laesa In Pectore, Sanguinem, Ut Fama Est, Emisit. His Permotus, Comuni Omnium Suffragio Et Publico Decreto Restaurata Aedicula, Tam Illustria Monumenta et Grati Animi Memoriam Extare Voluit S.P.L.F.AN.Domini MDCCXXX.”

The translation is roughly as follows: “This image of the Mother of God, before which Saint Dominic, speaking first to the people of Fermo, foreshadowed with his holiness the benefit to Fermo in the year of the Lord 1214. This image, wounded in the chest by an accidental gunshot, bled, as tradition recounts. Moved by these events, by the common vote of all and by public decree, the shrine was restored, so that such an illustrious monument and a token of grateful remembrance might endure. S.P.L.F. in the Year of the Lord 1730.”

This text not only testifies to Saint Dominic’s visit but also to a miraculous event: the image of the Madonna, accidentally struck by a firearm, is said to have bled.

The Madonna del Ferro Sanctuary houses a precious collection of votive offerings, gifts donated by the faithful as thanks for received graces.
