Sanctuary of the Madonna del Fulmine: A Miracle Amidst the Abruzzo Mountains
Nestled in the picturesque setting of Corona, a hamlet of Massa d’Albe (AQ), at the foot of the majestic Monte Velino, stands the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Fulmine. A place steeped in faith, history, and miracles, tied to a miraculous event that marked the local community and continues to attract pilgrims and visitors.
The History of the Sanctuary: From Destruction to Rebirth
The current Sanctuary is the result of a reconstruction carried out in the 1920s, necessary after the devastating earthquake of 1915 that leveled much of the region. The structure features a main nave flanked by a side aisle, with an asymmetrical facade characterized by a central section topped by a pediment and a horizontal side element. Two doorways with stone frames form the entrance system. The Latin cross layout with a single nave houses side chapels and altars, while the bell tower rises on the right side.
The Miracle of the Lightning: The Origin of Devotion
The origin of the Sanctuary is shrouded in a supernatural event dated June 8, 1795. Legend has it that a bolt of lightning struck the parish church, revealing a frescoed image of the Madonna, previously hidden beneath the plaster. This event was interpreted as a divine sign, giving rise to the veneration of the Madonna del Fulmine.
On the occasion of the first centenary of the miracle, Abbot D. Angelo Volpe compiled a booklet recounting the story of the miraculous event, helping to spread the devotion and root the Sanctuary in the heart of the community.
The Miraculous Fresco: An Artistic Treasure to Discover
The fresco depicts the Madonna with her face gently inclined toward the faithful, holding the blessing Child on her lap. Art experts attribute it to the Sienese school and the influence of Mantegna, dating its creation to the second half of the 15th century, a period when the Marsican villages were taking shape.
The image, originally dedicated to Santa Maria, the patroness of the abbey, was crowned by papal decree around 1500, giving rise to the name of the village: Santa Maria de Corona, later shortened to Corona.
A Privileged Altar: The Blessing of Pius IX
The altar dedicated to the Madonna was consecrated by Mons. Giuseppe Bolognese, then diocesan bishop, and later adorned by Pope Pius IX with the diploma of a privileged altar, a testament to its importance and the grace that could be obtained there.
Treasures of Faith: The Ex Votos (and Their History)
In ancient times, the walls of the Sanctuary were covered with ex votos, votive offerings donated by the faithful as a sign of gratitude for received graces. These included painted tablets, inscribed plaques, goldsmith objects, prosthetics, and other items of various kinds.
Unfortunately, most of these precious testimonies of faith were lost in the 1915 earthquake. Subsequent ones were sold, with due authorization, to fund the reconstruction of the parish church in the years 1938-40. Their absence represents a significant loss for the historical and devotional memory of the Sanctuary.

Many miracles attributed to the Madonna del Fulmine were enumerated and reported to the bishop’s curia, while others have been passed down orally from generation to generation. Unfortunately, documentation related to many of these miraculous events has been lost over time.
