The Miraculous History of the Byzantine Icon

The heart of the sanctuary is the Byzantine icon depicting the Madonna del Prodigio, surrounded by two angels and holding the Child Jesus. Tradition holds that the icon was miraculously discovered in the Adriatic Sea on September 12, 1669, during a violent storm. The Zancaropulo Berardo counts, fleeing from Candia (Crete) after its fall under Turkish rule, attributed their salvation during the tumultuous crossing to the sacred image.

The icon remained in Venice, safeguarded by the Zancaropulo Berardo family, until 1820. Later, it was transferred to Salvaterra Polesine (Badia Polesine) by the last descendant of the family, Margherita Zancaropulo Berardo, wife of Count Antonio Lorenzoni Pellegrini. Inherited by the Pellegrini counts of Almenno San Salvatore (Bergamo), it was then donated to the provost of Cernobbio (Como), Don Pietro Maurelli. Finally, thanks to the efforts of Monsignor Antonio Pagani, the icon arrived in Maslianico (CO) in 1912 and later in Garzola di Como in 1915, where it was decided to erect a sanctuary in its honor.

Monsignor Pagani and Don Galli: Two Key Figures in the Sanctuary’s History

Monsignor Antonio Pagani, driven by deep devotion to the Madonna del Prodigio, began the construction of the sanctuary on October 26, 1919, but the work remained unfinished. It was Don Luigi Galli, appointed parish priest of Garzola in 1957, who completed the project. Don Galli, passionate about rowing and powerboating, conceived the idea of dedicating the sanctuary to all practitioners of nautical disciplines, gaining approval from Pope John XXIII in 1959. Pope Paul VI blessed the start of the works in 1965 and inaugurated the sanctuary on March 24, 1968.
