A shepherd, Sebastiano Ambrosi, drawn by a celestial light, discovered an image of the Madonna on a boulder inscribed with “Ave Maris Stella.”
The construction of the sanctuary was an act of faith and recognition of these wondrous events. Begun in 1695, the church was unfortunately destroyed by a flood in 1772. Yet, popular devotion endured, and the sanctuary was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1774. The original fresco, recovered from the ruins, was solemnly reinstated, a testament to the resilience of faith.
