Madonna della Stella Sanctuary: A Jewel of Faith Between History and Nature

The Madonna della Stella Sanctuary, nestled in the picturesque setting of Lake Canterno, is a place of profound spirituality and Marian devotion. Though modest in size and external architecture, with its yellow facade and iron stairway leading to the entrance, it safeguards a treasure of faith and local history.

The heart of the sanctuary is the sacred image of the Madonna, a painting on stone depicting the Virgin in a red robe and blue mantle, tenderly holding the Child Jesus. A star shines on her mantle, symbolizing her guidance and protection. Two angels flank the Mother of God, completing this deeply sacred scene.

History and Miracles: A Journey of Faith

The sanctuary’s history is woven with miraculous events and divine manifestations. In 1690, the pious Felicia Colarossi of Anticoli had a vision of the Madonna in this very place. Shortly after, Antonio da Alatri, in despair as his donkey was drowning in the lake, heard a voice urging him to invoke Mary. Upon obeying, he witnessed his animal miraculously saved. A shepherd, Sebastiano Ambrosi, drawn by a celestial light, discovered an image of the Madonna on a boulder inscribed with “Ave Maris Stella.”

The construction of the sanctuary was an act of faith and recognition of these wondrous events. Begun in 1695, the church was unfortunately destroyed by a flood in 1772. Yet, popular devotion endured, and the sanctuary was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1774. The original fresco, recovered from the ruins, was solemnly reinstated, a testament to the resilience of faith.

Between Faith and “Adventure”: In Search of Origins

The Madonna della Stella Sanctuary is not only a place of prayer but also a starting point for exploring the surrounding area. Legend has it that the sanctuary’s final location was providentially decided: the sacred image was placed on an ox-drawn cart, and the spot where the animals stopped was chosen as the construction site. Visitors can retrace this journey in spirit, seeking the ancient location on Mount Porciano where the Madonna appeared—a faith-guided treasure hunt.

Moreover, the Lake Canterno area offers opportunities for nature hikes and scenic discoveries. The beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains invites contemplation and reflection, blending spirituality and nature in perfect harmony.

Ex Votos: Testimonies of Grace Received

Inside the sanctuary, a collection of ex votos stands as a touching testament to the faith and gratitude of devotees. Votive hearts, photographs, and paintings recount stories of graces received and miracles attributed to the intercession of the Madonna della Stella. Each object is a tangible sign of divine presence in people’s lives, a hymn to heavenly mercy.

Saints and Spirituality: A Refuge for the Soul

Though the Madonna della Stella is the central figure, the sanctuary’s spirituality intertwines with the memory of other saints who illuminated Christian faith:

    • Saint Sebastian: His story of martyrdom and courage is an example of unwavering faith, particularly venerated as a protector against plagues and diseases.
    • Saint Felicia: The young visionary who first witnessed the Marian apparition, a model of purity and devotion.

The Madonna della Stella Sanctuary thus offers a refuge for the soul—a place where prayer, history, nature, and art merge into a unique and unforgettable experience. An invitation to rediscover the beauty of faith and the power of Marian devotion.
