History and Architecture: A Journey Through Time
The history of the Sanctuary Madonna del Bosco has its roots in a distant past. Although the current building was constructed in 1971, the devotion to the Madonna del Bosco in this place is much older. The new sanctuary, with its single nave, sloping roof, and square apse, presents a simple yet welcoming architecture. Outside, the gabled facade with a single portal and the spacious portico invite contemplation. The bell tower, rising on the left side of the presbytery, completes the harmonious complex.
An element of particular interest is the apse wall and the circular staircase, built in memory of the ancient chapel. These remains testify to the long history of faith and devotion that has characterized this sacred place.
The Sacred Painting: A Treasure of Art and Devotion
The heart of the sanctuary is kept inside: the painting depicting the Madonna with the Child. The work, dating back to the late 16th century, portrays the Virgin seated with the Child on her lap, against a rural backdrop. The Madonna, wearing a pink tunic and a dark green mantle, holds the naked Child with both hands, who clings to the maternal mantle. Two angels crown the Madonna’s head, holding a scroll with the inscription: REGINA COELI/ LAETARE/ ALLELUIA.
The history of the painting is marked by dramatic events. In 1896 and especially in 1914, the work was desecrated and devastated. Fortunately, the fragments were found and the image restored, testifying to the resilience of faith and the devotion of the community. An inscription on the apse of the old sanctuary commemorates these events.

Ex Votos: Testimonies of Received Grace
The walls of the sanctuary are enriched by numerous ex votos, votive offerings donated by the faithful as a sign of gratitude for the graces received. Painted tablets, goldsmith objects, and photographs tell stories of miraculous healings, protection, and intercession by the Madonna del Bosco.
Research and Adventure Opportunities
In addition to its religious and artistic importance, the Sanctuary Madonna del Bosco also offers exploration and adventure opportunities for curious visitors. The surroundings of the sanctuary, characterized by the typical Puglian countryside, invite pleasant walks to discover ancient paths and unspoiled landscapes. One can search for traces of the old destroyed sanctuary, meditating on the profound sense of vulnerability and rebirth.
Moreover, the surrounding area is rich in history and culture. A short distance away is Gravina in Puglia, a fascinating city with a rich historical and architectural heritage. Let us not forget that in 1503, at the time of the Disfida di Barletta, the mother of the spinazzolese Giovanni Capoccio (a protagonist alongside Ettore Fieramosca in the duel against the French) went to pray, among other churches, precisely in the chapel of Santa Maria del Bosco.
Devotion and Miracles: Faith That Transcends Time
Devotion to the Madonna del Bosco is deeply rooted in the local community. An inscription on the site where the first sanctuary stood commemorates the liberation from the cholera epidemic of 1813 through the intercession of the Madonna del Bosco, an event that has helped to fuel faith and gratitude towards the Virgin.
Visiting the Sanctuary Madonna del Bosco means immersing oneself in an atmosphere of peace and spirituality, letting oneself be enveloped by the beauty of art and nature, and discovering the deep devotion that animates this sacred place. An unforgettable experience for those seeking a moment of reflection and connection with their faith.
