Madonna Parè Sanctuary: A Treasure of Faith, Art, and History in the Dolomites

Nestled in the beauty of the Belluno Prealps, the Madonna Parè Sanctuary in Limana (BL) is a place of profound spirituality, home to sacred art, and a witness to centuries of history. An invitation to prayer as well as the discovery of a captivating corner of Veneto.

History and Devotion: A Journey Through Time

The origins of the sanctuary are lost in the mists of time, likely predating the 16th century. The first documented mention dates back to 1519, during the Pastoral Visit of Bishop Galeso Nichesola. This record attests to the deep-rooted Marian devotion in the area as early as the Renaissance.

A particularly intriguing figure is the hermit Giacomo Tison, who lived between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Considered a man of faith and virtue, Giacomo Tison lived as a hermit near the sanctuary. His image, once depicted in a frescoed medallion on the church ceiling (now unfortunately lost) and in one of the Stations of the Cross, fueled popular veneration. Stories and legends tell of his arrival from Palestine after a long pilgrimage and the trials of his hermitic life. His story adds a unique charm to the sanctuary, linking the sacredness of the place to the simple, contemplative life of the hermit.

Over the centuries, the sanctuary underwent several transformations. In 1642, during the visit of Bishop Giovanni Battista Bembo, the church was described as having a simple wooden-beamed ceiling, a stone floor, and frescoed walls. An altar housed the painting of the Blessed Virgin with Saints Peter, Charles, John, and Mark.

A pivotal moment for the sanctuary came in 1842. The archpriest Luigi Dall’Orta, moved by his chaplain Don Giuseppe Sandi, denounced the neglected state of the church and the access road. Thanks to the generosity of the local community, the sanctuary was restored, the sacristy and the hermit’s cell were built, and the road was repaired. In 1845, Archpriest Dall’Osta obtained official recognition for the Madonna Parè’s Stations of the Cross, along with attached indulgences.

Art and Architecture: A Dialogue Between Faith and Beauty

The heart of the sanctuary is the 16th-century altarpiece depicting the Madonna with Saints Peter, Charles, John the Baptist, and Mark. This work, already mentioned in 1627 during the Pastoral Visit of Bishop Dolfin, represents a precious example of Venetian sacred art from the 1500s. The altarpiece reflects the deep devotion to the Madonna and the patron saints of the region.

Next to the church stand the hermit’s cottage and the thirteen Stations of the Cross, built in 1842. The Stations invite the faithful to retrace Christ’s sorrowful path to crucifixion, offering a moment of reflection and prayer amidst nature.
