History and Transformations of a Sacred Place
The roots of this sanctuary trace back to ancient times. As early as the 13th century, a church dedicated to St. Eusebius and the Three Wise Men stood in this same area, likely on an ancient burial ground. For centuries, it served as the parish church, a focal point for the local community.
In 1933, with the construction of a new and larger parish church, also dedicated to St. Eusebius, the original building was abandoned. A period of obscurity seemed destined to envelop it, but Providence had a different fate in store.
In 1961, the pastoral visit of Archbishop Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI, marked a turning point. His interest in the ancient church sparked a process of restoration and enhancement that culminated, between 1970 and 1982, in significant renovation and expansion works. The tunnel connecting the Monastery of St. Joseph to the church was transformed into a staircase, making it easier for the cloistered nuns to access. The ciborium was restored with precious marbles, the presbytery and altar were renewed, and in 1974, the convent of the Romite di Sant’Ambrogio was inaugurated.
In 1977, after a meticulous restoration that included the creation of new stained-glass windows and mosaics, the ancient church was reopened for worship and consecrated as a sanctuary dedicated to Mary Mother of the Church and St. Joseph.
Art and Devotion: The Statue of the Virgin with Child and the Rosary
The heart of the sanctuary lies within: a precious 16th-century painted terracotta statue depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus and the Rosary. A gift from the parish of Cusago, this sacred image radiates profound spirituality and invites prayer and contemplation.
