Another tradition links the sanctuary to the Madonna della Neve, recalling a miraculous event similar to the one in Rome, with snowfall on August 5th on the land where the sanctuary was later built.
A Hermitage Rich in History
The church existed even before the miraculous event occurred, around the year 1574. Starting in 1653, with the suppression of the convent, a period of decline began for the Church of Santa Maria, worsened by the cholera epidemic in 1656 that severely affected the population of Vivaro. Despite the hardships, a lay custodian continued to care for the sanctuary. In 1774, in the absence of even a custodian, the Archpriest received permission to rent the hermitage as a hayloft and stable, provided the proceeds were used for the church’s benefit. This situation persisted until the early 20th century when Cardinal Di Pietro (+1914) oversaw the sanctuary’s restoration and bequeathed funds for its maintenance, saving it from further decay.
