A Sanctuary of History and Devotion

The sanctuary features a single nave with a chapel opening on the right side near the presbytery. The façade, adorned with a pointed-arch lunette above the entrance door, welcomes visitors with a sense of grandeur and sacredness. At the rear, the apse is separated from the rest of the church by a wall, creating a reserved and intimate space for prayer and reflection.

A Statue of Mary: Art and Faith

Inside the sanctuary, there is a statue of the Madonna della Camera, crafted in 1964 by the sculptor Giuseppe Stuffler of Ortisei. This modern representation of the Virgin Mary remains a symbol of devotion and a call to faith for the faithful who visit the sanctuary. Currently, the fresco, the result of numerous repaintings and modifications, has been cut out and framed. The Madonna, following the Hodighitria iconographic style, points with her right hand to the Child placed on her left. Jesus holds a globe in his left hand while blessing with his right.

A 15th-Century Miracle

Devotion to Maria Santissima Della Camera dates back to at least 1462, the year of a miraculous intervention by the Madonna. According to tradition, the image of the Madonna and Child, frescoed in the apse and now framed, performed a miracle on the Thursday in Albis of that year. This event marked the beginning of the sanctuary’s life as a place of worship and pilgrimage.

A Miraculous Protection

One of the most fascinating stories linked to the sanctuary dates back to the time of the war between the Prince of Taranto Orsini and the King of Naples Ferdinand of Aragon. According to legend, Albanian troops plundering the region attempted to break down the door of the Church of Santa Maria della Camera. However, the door miraculously withstood their blows. Disturbed, the troop captain knocked gently, and the door opened. Inside, the captain found praying peasants and frightened young girls at the feet of the fresco of the Madonna and Child. Moved by the scene, he made the sign of the cross and ordered his men to leave Roccaforzata untouched, thus saving the village from destruction.

Disputes and Apparitions

Another popular tale recounts a dispute between the inhabitants of Roccaforzata and those of Monteparano over the ownership of the Church of the Madonna della Camera. It was decided that the Virgin herself would indicate to which village she belonged. According to tradition, the direction of the Madonna’s gaze the day after the resolution would determine the outcome. Since her gaze was directed toward Roccaforzata, it was understood that the Virgin had chosen this village.

Pastoral Visits and Historical Documents

In 1578, the Bishop of Taranto, Monsignor Lelio Brancaccio, visited the sanctuary during a pastoral visit. His report provides valuable details about the original layout of the church, confirming the historical and spiritual importance of this sacred place.
