Sanctuary of the Most Holy Name of Mary of Boschetto: An Oasis of Faith in Piacenza

Nestled in the tranquility of the Piacenza countryside, the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Name of Mary of Boschetto has stood for centuries as a beacon of spirituality and a place of profound Marian devotion. The origins of the sanctuary date back to September 1683. A young mute girl named Angela Broglia, while tending her flock, went to pray at a small chapel in the woods, which housed an image of the Madonna painted on a sandstone slab. Suddenly, an extraordinary event occurred: Angela regained her hearing and heard a heavenly voice inviting her to speak.

News of the miracle spread quickly, attracting a multitude of faithful eager to invoke the grace of the Madonna. Among them was Matteo Bonti, a commissioner of the Farnese family from Borgo Val Taro, who had been severely injured in his legs after a fall from his horse. He promised that, if healed, he would contribute to the construction of a larger and more dignified church. Upon receiving his healing, Bonti kept his promise, involving the entire community in the realization of the new sanctuary.

The construction of the sanctuary, with its octagonal base and splendid dome, was completed in record time, between September 1683 and February 1685. The building was surrounded by a portico on five sides, offering shelter to the many pilgrims. Behind the main altar, to this day, the original stone with the miraculous image of the Madonna is preserved.

Architecture and Art: A Treasure of Devotion

The architecture of the Sanctuary of Boschetto, with its octagonal plan and imposing dome, reflects the Baroque style of the era. Over the centuries, the building has undergone several modifications, particularly in its entrances and altars, but it has retained its charm and sacred atmosphere intact.

The image of the Madonna and Child, painted on sandstone likely in the early 17th century, represents the spiritual heart of the sanctuary. The painting, previously protected by a small chapel, has been venerated for centuries for the many miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary.
