    Nestled in the heart of Castelgrande, the Sanctuary of the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta stands as a jewel of architecture and faith. More than just a church, it is a place steeped in history, miracles, and a Marian devotion rooted in an extraordinary apparition. Its imposing structure and the precious icon housed within tell centuries of pilgrimage and sacred art.

    History and Miraculous Origins

    The history of this sanctuary begins with a wondrous event. According to tradition, in 1680, some inhabitants, who had fled to the “Vallone Vivo” area after a cataclysm, were enveloped by a celestial light emanating from a spring. In that light, they saw the Virgin Mary, who expressed the desire to remain in that place to dispense blessings.

    Deeply moved, the faithful had an image of the vision carved in wood and began constructing the sanctuary a few hundred meters away, where the ground seemed more suitable. However, the next morning, the workers found the building collapsed. The Virgin, appearing again to some shepherds, requested that the church be built precisely at the site of her apparition. Despite the warning, the workers attempted to rebuild in the same spot, but the building collapsed a second time inexplicably.

    Only after the third apparition, in which the Madonna promised that the construction would remain stable only if her will was respected, was it decided to build the sanctuary where it stands today. This extraordinary episode of obedience to divine will marks the origin of a place of worship that has never ceased to attract the faithful since. In the following centuries, the chapel was under the patronage of the university of Castelgrande, a testament to its deep bond with the community.

    Architecture and Artworks

    The sanctuary’s architecture is a fascinating example of a central plan with a Greek cross, a layout that creates a harmonious and solemn environment. The space is organized around a central square surmounted by a majestic dome, connected by a cylindrical drum.

    • **Internal Structure**: From each side of the central square opens a **semicircular chapel** with a vault. Four corner pillars support arches that in turn bear the drum and lead into the four apses. The interior shows a **marked Baroque influence**.
    • **Exterior**: The articulation of the spaces is visible externally in the movement of the wall masses, with the central dome rising above the roofs of the chapels. At the intersection of the chapels, stone buttresses are visible, added during restorations between the 19th and 20th centuries.
    • **Façade**: The current entrance façade, built in 1955 thanks to the devotion of a faithful emigrant to America, appears as a distinct element compared to the original architecture of the chapel.

    The Sanctuary’s Treasure: The Polychrome Wooden Statue of the Virgin

    The heart of the devotion is the splendid polychrome wooden statue from the first half of the 16th century. Carved in high relief on a blue background decorated with stars and flowers, it depicts the seated and blessing Virgin Mary. With her left hand, she holds the Child Jesus, who is also blessing and holds a globe in his left hand.

    The figures’ garments and hair are gilded, and two angels are depicted crowning the Virgin’s head. The icon is set in a precious frame from 1614, which includes a predella with coats of arms of Castelgrande, an epigraph, and figures of Saint Charles Borromeo and Saint Thomas Aquinas. An intriguing scene in the lower part shows a fortified city, which some identify with Castelgrande, others, more plausibly, with Constantinople.

    How to Visit and Traditions

    Visiting this sanctuary is an experience that combines art, history, and spirituality. The church follows a north-south axis, with an entrance, nave, presbytery, and apse. The latter connects, through a sacristy added later, to the rectory.

    For pilgrims and history enthusiasts, the place offers a stratified reading: from the original architecture to the 19th-century restorations, up to the 20th-century façade, each element tells a phase of the community’s life.

    Unfortunately, as attested by documents from 1728 and 1889, a rich collection of ex-votos in silver (depictions of eyes, hands, and half-moons) and goldsmith objects that once enriched the sanctuary has been completely lost over time. This loss accentuates the value of what remains, making the Marian statue an even more precious treasure to discover and venerate.


    A journey to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Assunta in Castelgrande is a plunge into a history of unwavering faith, where Baroque art converses with a popular devotion born from a miracle, inviting reflection and discovery.
