San Vicinio Mountain Sanctuary: A Hermitage of Faith and History in the Heart of the Apennines
Nestled in the heart of the Apennines, the San Vicinio Mountain Sanctuary stands as a beacon of spirituality and history. This place, imbued with sacredness since ancient times, offers visitors a unique experience, combining deep religious devotion with the wild beauty of the surrounding nature.
Origins: Between Legend and History
The origins of the sanctuary are lost in the mists of time, wrapped in a fascinating blend of legends and historical reality. Although the legendary episodes linking the mountain to the proto-bishop of Sarsina, Saint Vicinius, find no direct mention in his “Life,” popular devotion has always identified this place as the setting for the saint’s penance and prayers. Stories tell, for example, of Saint Vicinius’s penance and death on Monte della Musella and of the chain he used to atone for sins. That Monte della Musella was renamed Monte di San Vicinio is attested by the Sarsina Synod of 1380 and the pastoral visit of 1573.
A possible origin of the mountain’s association might lie in a passage from the “Life of Saint Vicinius,” which refers to the “summit of the spiritual mountain” (“in spiritualis montis vertice constitutus”), a metaphorical expression indicating the spiritual elevation achieved by the saint upon his appointment as bishop. Over time, this may have been interpreted as a specific physical location.
Saint Vicinius: The Shepherd Who Illuminated Sarsina
Saint Vicinius, venerated as the protector of the Diocese of Sarsina, was a man of deep faith and tireless pastoral zeal. Born at an uncertain date, presumably in the 4th century, he distinguished himself through his evangelizing work and his fight against Arian heresy. His life was marked by miracles and acts of charity toward the needy. His austere and charismatic figure continues to inspire the faithful who visit the sanctuary to seek his protection and intercession.

The Greek Cross Oratory: A Jewel of Faith and Art
The heart of the sanctuary is the Greek cross oratory, a small treasure trove of faith and art. Built at an uncertain date but certainly predating 1380, the oratory has undergone several restorations over the centuries, the most recent of which dates back to the early 1960s. Inside, visitors can admire exquisite artworks, including a notable 1761 canvas by Michele Valbonesi depicting the Apparition of the Virgin and Child to the Hermit Saint Vicinius. The painting testifies to the deep veneration of the saint and the centuries-old Marian devotion rooted in this place.
A Place of Devotion and Requests for Grace
In the past, the oratory housed a collection of ex-votos, tangible evidence of the graces received by the faithful through Saint Vicinius’s intercession. These objects, offered as tokens of gratitude for healing from illnesses, protection in difficult times, or the resolution of personal problems, represented a true treasure of popular faith. Although the collection is no longer present, the spirit of devotion and the tradition of requesting graces remains intact, fueled by hope and deep trust in the patron saint.
