Notre-Dame de Plout Sanctuary: A Pilgrimage of Faith, History, and Nature

Nestled in the heart of the Aosta Valley, in Saint-Marcel, stands the Notre-Dame de Plout Sanctuary, a place of profound spirituality and rich history. The turning point came in 1640. Tradition tells of a local mason who, after falling from a roof while working, broke his leg. Invoking the Virgin’s intercession with faith, he vowed to build an oratory in her honor if he recovered. Miraculously healed, the mason kept his promise, constructing a small oratory around the statue of Notre-Dame des Ermites. During the 18th century, between 1714 and 1715, the original oratory was expanded and solemnly consecrated on September 14, 1714, reflecting the growing importance of this place of worship.

The cornerstone was blessed on November 6, 1850, in the presence of ecclesiastical authorities and the local community. The work, entrusted to contractor Jérome Borney of Aosta, took place between 1851 and 1853. The result was an elegant Greek cross-shaped building crowned by a majestic dome. On September 14, 1853, during the patronal feast, the new sanctuary was inaugurated, providing a welcoming space for prayer and devotion.
