The sanctuary’s roots trace back to the distant 18th century when a modest countryside chapel was built. However, around 1905, the original structure had fallen into disrepair. It was then decided to rebuild the edifice on the foundations of the former church, once dedicated to St. Paul the Hermit, a Christian hermit of the 3rd–4th century AD, considered the first Christian hermit. St. Paul the Hermit exemplifies an ascetic life and total dedication to God in the silence and solitude of the desert.
Historical records indicate that the reconstruction took place in 1905 at the behest of the parish priest of Santa Giusta, Don Giuseppe Inzaina. Unfortunately, little is known about the original structure of the sanctuary. The current building features a single nave divided into three bays, with a wooden ceiling that lends a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Architecture and Sacred Art: A Hymn to Simplicity and Devotion
The sanctuary’s exterior walls are made of exposed granite blocks, giving the building a rustic and authentic appearance. The roof was constructed with tiles resting on wooden laths and supported by iron beams held by arches. The cement floor and walls plastered with lime mortar contribute to the simplicity of the ensemble. Aluminum fixtures and wooden doors complete the structure, while a touch of whiteness is added by the lime wash.
Inside the sanctuary, the imposing faux-marble altar captures visitors’ attention. In this sacred space, three niches house statues representing Our Lady of Grace, St. Paul the Hermit, and St. Lucia. The statue of Our Lady of Grace, placed in the central niche, is the primary object of veneration and has gradually overshadowed the figure of St. Paul the Hermit, who was once the focus of devotion.
