Madonna della Salute Sanctuary: A Place of Devotion and History in Cusino
Nestled in the beauty of the Lombard Prealps, the Madonna della Salute Sanctuary in Cusino (CO) is a place of faith, history, and centuries-old traditions. A spiritual refuge where popular devotion intertwines with the events that have shaped the local community. Its history, which began humbly in the early 20th century, is an example of how the faith and perseverance of a people can give rise to a sacred place.
History and Architecture: From Its Origins to the Present Day
The original 1906 project envisioned a modest oratory with a single hall. However, the growing devotion to the Madonna della Salute spurred the community to expand the structure. Between 1910 and 1912, significant work was carried out in the choir area. Later, between 1925 and 1946, the bell tower and portico were erected, elements that gave the sanctuary a more imposing and welcoming appearance.
A dramatic event marked the sanctuary’s history in 1965 when a lightning strike sparked a fire that destroyed much of the building. But the faith of Cusino’s inhabitants did not waver. With great determination, they rebuilt the sanctuary, preserving its simplicity and original spirit. The current structure is a single-hall building, enhanced by a portico and a bell tower. The gabled roof gives the ensemble a traditional and harmonious appearance.
Examining the façade, one can see six openings that help illuminate the interior: a central rectangular door, topped by a blind lunette, flanked by two rectangular windows. In the upper part, there are two curved-profile openings and, in the center, a circular oculus that allows light to filter through, creating evocative plays of shadow.
Treasures of Faith: Sacred Images and Popular Devotion
Inside the sanctuary, the faithful can admire important symbols of devotion to the Madonna della Salute.
The Painting of the Madonna della Salute: A work of great artistic and spiritual value depicting the Virgin Mary. Added to the sanctuary’s heritage in 1906, it is a focal point for prayer and contemplation.
The Statue of the Madonna della Salute: A sculpture representing the Virgin, an object of great veneration by the faithful. Dating back to 1909, the statue is carried in procession during religious festivals and symbolizes protection and comfort.
Although there is currently no formal collection of ex-votos, devotion to the Madonna della Salute is evidenced by the many prayers and offerings left by the faithful in the sanctuary as a sign of gratitude for received graces.
A Sanctuary Built with Faith: The Story of a People
The construction of the Madonna della Salute Sanctuary is a story of faith, commitment, and solidarity. In 1905, the project was drafted, and in June 1906, the first stone was laid. The inauguration took place on August 19 of the same year, an event that deeply marked the community of Cusino. The uniqueness of this construction lies in the essential contribution of the village’s women, who actively participated in fundraising and transporting construction materials up the mountain. An act of faith and devotion that has made the sanctuary a symbol of unity and collaboration.
