Shrine of Our Lady of the Lights: A Beacon of Faith in Montemarciano

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Lights, located in Montemarciano in the Marche region, is a place of profound spirituality and Marian devotion. Its history is steeped in faith, miracles, and a centuries-old bond with the local community. This shrine is not only an important religious center but also a site of historical and artistic significance.

The Miraculous Fresco: Heart of Devotion

At the heart of the shrine’s veneration is a fresco depicting the Madonna nursing the Child Jesus. This artwork is a copy, dating back to the late 15th century, of an original 15th-century painting that unfortunately deteriorated due to weather. The fresco, heavily retouched in the Baroque period with oil paint, continues to radiate an aura of sacredness and hope.

It is said that even before 1460, a similar image, painted on canvas, hung from an oak tree and was already an object of veneration for the graces granted to the faithful. Among the devotees were Giacomo Piccolomini, nephew of Pope Pius II, and his wife Cristofora Colonna, who in 1465 funded the construction of a chapel to protect the sacred image. The current fresco is a faithful reproduction of that original image, created to preserve its memory and devotion.

The Apparition of the Lights: A Heavenly Miracle

Between 1593 and 1596, the shrine was the site of a miraculous event: the apparition of the Lights. An intense light radiated from the chapel, illuminating the night—a celestial sign that drew the attention and faith of many. To verify the authenticity of the event, an ecclesiastical process was initiated between January 29 and 31, 1596, which helped solidify the shrine’s reputation for holiness.

Expansion and Care of the Shrine

The growing influx of pilgrims led, between 1596 and 1606, to the expansion of the church and the creation of facilities for hospitality: a residence for priests and a guesthouse for pilgrims. On February 22, 1607, at the behest of Bishop Antaldo degli Antaldi and with the approval of Pope Paul V, the Collegiate Church was established—a college of five chaplains and a prior—which remained active until June 12, 1773, when the care of the shrine was transferred to the parish church of St. Peter the Apostle in Montemarciano.

Treasures of Faith: The Ex-Votos

Tangible evidence of the faith and gratitude of the faithful are the ex-votos preserved in the shrine. Jewelry and other votive offerings, given as thanks for received graces, tell stories of healings, protections, and miraculous intercessions by Our Lady of the Lights.
