Over the centuries, the simple shrine evolved into a full-fledged sanctuary. In 1718, the first church structure was built, expanded and improved in 1815, and further enlarged in 1847. The bell tower was erected in 1894, a visible symbol of the growing importance of the place of worship. In 1932, thanks to the efforts of Knight Ettore Nasturzio, the access road was constructed, making it easier for pilgrims to visit.
A particularly significant event for the sanctuary was the granting of the first indulgence by Pope Pius VII in 1810, during his imprisonment in Savona. This papal recognition bestowed even greater spiritual importance on the site, drawing pilgrims from far and wide.
Art and Devotion: Testimonies of Faith
Inside the sanctuary, the main altar houses a painting of the Virgin of Mercy, likely commissioned to replace a pre-existing fresco in poor condition. The painting was restored in 1882 by the painter Stefano Sansebastiano of Novi. Once, the walls were adorned with numerous painted tablets and goldsmith works—ex-votos offered by the faithful in gratitude for graces received. These objects, now kept in the sacristy, bear witness to the deep popular devotion and unwavering faith in the Virgin’s protection.
