The history of the Sanctuary dates back to the 12th century, with the first record of a monastery/hospital from 1184. The original Romanesque church was consecrated in 1210, attesting to the importance of the site from its earliest centuries. In 1847, the Benedictines of Muri entered the former canonry of Gries, establishing the Muri-Gries Monastery and also acquiring jurisdiction over Senale. However, in 1989, the Benedictines relinquished control, and Senale returned to being a simple parish.
