Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Angels: A Place of Faith, History, and Discovery in Arcola
Nestled in the tranquil hamlet of Carbonara, in the municipality of Arcola (SP), the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Angels stands as a beacon of spirituality and a guardian of centuries of history and Marian devotion. This sacred place invites pilgrims and visitors to a profound experience, blending faith, art, and the beauty of the Ligurian landscape.
A Miraculous Apparition: The Origin of Devotion
The sanctuary’s history is rooted in an extraordinary event: on May 21, 1556, the Virgin Mary appeared to five sisters of the Fiamberti family (Barbara, Camilla, Elisabetta, Caterinetta, and Angela) on a rosemary plant, accompanied by two Angels. The Madonna urged the young women to penance and requested the construction of a chapel on that blessed site. This miraculous event marked the beginning of the sanctuary’s construction, as documented in the first official record dated March 26, 1584, during the pastoral visit of Monsignor Peruzzi.
Architecture and Sacred Art: A Journey into Beauty
The church, with its three naves separated by Ionic columns, welcomes visitors with its solemn and contemplative atmosphere. The central nave stretches 34 meters, while the side naves measure 22 meters, offering a spacious and harmonious setting. Three altars adorn the interior, inviting prayer and reflection.
The heart of the sanctuary is the Chapel of the Apparition, located beneath the presbytery. This sacred space, built on the exact spot of the Marian epiphany, houses a precious statue of the Virgin, crafted by sculptor Battista Orsolini (1624). Admiring this sculpture means connecting directly with the sanctuary’s history and spirituality.
Testimonies of Faith: The Ex-Votos
The sanctuary’s walls hold a rich collection of ex-votos, tangible testimonies of the faithful’s devotion and gratitude. Inscribed tablets, paintings, and other votive objects recount stories of received graces and hope. These artifacts, carefully preserved in the church, offer an authentic glimpse into popular devotion and the deep connection between the faithful and Our Lady of the Angels.
A Sanctuary Rich in History: Between Devotion and Human Events
Over the centuries, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Angels has experienced moments of splendor and hardship. From its origins, it benefited from numerous bequests, donations, and wills, reflecting the community’s generosity and devotion. In 1630, an altar dedicated to the Nativity of Mary was erected, later demolished in 1776-77 along with two other side altars. In 1664, the debt for the creation of the Madonna statue was settled, a sign of the care and attention given to the sanctuary.
The sanctuary also faced difficult times, such as the looting by Napoleonic troops in 1798. In 1612, the Republic of Genoa granted the church’s patronage to the Parliament of the Arcolan Community to regulate its administration. In 1928, with its elevation to a parish, civil authorities lost all jurisdiction over the sanctuary.
Spiritual Adventure: Clues and Mysteries to Discover
Beyond its religious and artistic value, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Angels also offers hints for a more adventurous exploration. By visiting the Chapel of the Apparition, one can search for traces of the miraculous 1556 event. Studying the ex-votos reveals stories of faith and redemption.
