The sanctuary’s history is rooted in an extraordinary event: on May 21, 1556, the Virgin Mary appeared to five sisters of the Fiamberti family (Barbara, Camilla, Elisabetta, Caterinetta, and Angela) on a rosemary plant, accompanied by two Angels. The Madonna urged the young women to penance and requested the construction of a chapel on that blessed site. This miraculous event marked the beginning of the sanctuary’s construction, as documented in the first official record dated March 26, 1584, during the pastoral visit of Monsignor Peruzzi.
Architecture and Sacred Art: A Journey into Beauty
The church, with its three naves separated by Ionic columns, welcomes visitors with its solemn and contemplative atmosphere. The sanctuary also faced difficult times, such as the looting by Napoleonic troops in 1798. In 1612, the Republic of Genoa granted the church’s patronage to the Parliament of the Arcolan Community to regulate its administration. In 1928, with its elevation to a parish, civil authorities lost all jurisdiction over the sanctuary.
