Madonna della Sciara Sanctuary: Faith, History, and Miracles at the Foot of Mount Etna

Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Mount Etna, the Madonna della Sciara Sanctuary stands as a beacon of faith and Marian devotion. A place steeped in history, miracles, and art, it invites pilgrims on a profound spiritual journey and offers adventure seekers the chance to uncover hidden treasures.

The Precious Statues: Testaments of Faith and Artistic Mastery

The sanctuary houses two invaluable works of art:

    • Madonna and Child (15th century, Gaginesque school): This sculpture captivates with its delicacy and finely crafted details. The pedestal, adorned with high-reliefs depicting scenes of the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Flight into Egypt, tells the sacred story with deep emotional intensity.
    • Madonna and Child

    • Statuary Group of the Annunciation (Antonello Gagini, between 1500 and 1669): A masterpiece capturing the sublime moment of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel delivers the divine message to Mary. Antonello Gagini’s skill shines through in the plasticity of the figures and the expressive vividness of their faces.

A Sanctuary Reborn from Lava: The Story of a Miracle

The history of the Madonna della Sciara Sanctuary is inextricably linked to the eruptions of Mount Etna. An earlier temple, dedicated to the Most Holy Annunciation of Mary, already existed in the 16th century. Chronicles recount that the lava flow of 1537 miraculously spared it, preserving a place of prayer and devotion.

However, the volcano’s fury erupted again in 1669. The eruption of March 11 completely buried the sanctuary, along with its precious statues: the marble group of the Annunciation by Antonello Gagini and the statue of the Madonna of Graces from the Gaginesque school. A tragic event that deeply affected the local community.

But faith did not die. In 1689, the inhabitants of Mompilieri began digging through the lava rocks, driven by the hope of recovering the sacred images. And in 1704, the miracle happened: the statue of the Madonna of Graces was found intact. From that moment on, the Madonna was venerated as the “Madonna delle Sciare,” the Madonna who emerged from the lava.

As a sign of gratitude and remembrance of that miraculous event, a new sanctuary was erected on the very spot of the discovery. A temple dedicated to the Madonna delle Sciare, a symbol of resilience, faith, and hope.

    Marian Devotion and Ecclesiastical Recognition

Devotion to the Madonna della Sciara grew rapidly, attracting pilgrims from far and wide. The recovered statue became an object of deep veneration, a symbol of divine protection and intercession. The tale of its miraculous discovery envelops the place in mysticism and sacredness.

The importance of the sanctuary and its profound spiritual significance were officially recognized when Cardinal Giuseppe Francica-Nava elevated it to the status of a Marian sanctuary. A recognition that underscores the central role the Madonna della Sciara Sanctuary plays in the religious life of the community and in the spread of Marian devotion.

A Spiritual and Cultural Adventure: Discovering the Sanctuary

A visit to the Madonna della Sciara Sanctuary is not only an experience of faith but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the history, art, and nature of a unique place. In the surrounding area (and perhaps even within the sanctuary itself, with respect and discretion!), you can embark on small explorations to discover:

    • Traces of the ancient sanctuary: Are there still visible remains of the temple predating the 1669 eruption? Historical documents, old maps, or oral testimonies might reveal the exact location and features of the ancient church.
    • Ex-votos and testimonies of miracles: The sanctuary’s collection of ex-votos (if present) offers a fascinating window into the history of popular devotion, revealing the graces received and the faith stories of pilgrims.
    • Nature trails: The surroundings of the sanctuary provide opportunities to explore trails immersed in volcanic nature, admiring breathtaking landscapes and discovering the flora and fauna typical of Mount Etna.

The Madonna della Sciara Sanctuary is a place where faith, history, art, and nature merge into an unforgettable experience. An invitation to rediscover spirituality, to be captivated by the beauty of creation, and to embark on an inner and outer adventure.
