Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Visitation: A Journey Through Faith, History, and Miracles

Nestled in the heart of Liguria, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Visitation in Degna holds a centuries-old history of faith, miracles, and Marian devotion. A place where spirituality blends with the beauty of the landscape, offering visitors a unique experience of peace and reflection.

    Origins and Marian Apparition

The sanctuary’s history dates back to the first half of the 16th century when, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the young shepherdess Maria Tebaudi on July 2nd. Maria, who had been mute, miraculously regained her speech and was instructed to have a sanctuary built on that very spot. This event is considered the foundation of the devotion to Our Lady of the Visitation.

The inhabitants of Degna began constructing the sanctuary in a more accessible location, but the structure was inexplicably destroyed. Interpreting this as a divine sign, they decided to build the sanctuary right at the site of the apparition, a more rugged area. As a sign of approval, the Virgin caused a miraculous spring to gush forth from a rock—an event that still testifies to her presence and blessing today.

    Architecture and Artistic Treasures

The current single-nave sanctuary was built between 1616 and 1618. Above the portal on the façade, visitors can admire an image depicting the Madonna appearing to young Maria. The main altar houses the precious wooden processional statue, crafted by sculptor Antonio Brilia in 1853.

    Exterior of the Sanctuary

The statue of the Madonna, brought to the sanctuary in the 17th century, is linked to a curious episode. It is said that during its transport, a strong wind scattered the wheat sheaves of farmers who had not uncovered their heads as the sacred image passed by. This earned the statue its popular nickname, “Madonna of the Wind.”

    Popular Devotion and Received Graces

The sanctuary is a significant center of Marian devotion. For centuries, pilgrims have journeyed here to invoke the Madonna’s protection and give thanks for received graces. The sacristy holds a rich collection of ex-votos—tangible testimonies of the faithful’s faith and gratitude. Among these are painted tablets, inscribed plaques, prosthetics (real or depicted), photographs, and various objects, all recounting stories of miraculous healings and divine protection.

    Saints and Key Figures

Although the central figure is the Madonna, it is important to note that in the Catholic liturgical calendar, the Visitation of Mary is linked to the figures of St. Elizabeth and St. Zechariah, parents of St. John the Baptist. Mary’s visit to Elizabeth is a pivotal moment of the Annunciation, embodying charity and mutual aid among people.

Paths of Inquiry and Spiritual Adventure

Beyond its spiritual richness, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Visitation also offers avenues for inner exploration and spiritual adventure.

    Indulgences and Papal Recognitions

In 1647, Pope Innocent X granted a plenary indulgence to be obtained on the day of the apparition (July 2nd). In 1947, Pope Pius XII confirmed this privilege, emphasizing the sanctuary’s importance as a place of grace and forgiveness.
