Nestled in the gentle hills of Astigiano, the Sanctuary of San Michele at Pratomorone represents a place of profound spirituality and rich local history. Originally dedicated to the Madonna (Madonnina di Vulgo Scapenzo), the sanctuary has undergone transformations over the centuries, always maintaining a vibrant connection with popular faith and Marian and Michaeline devotion.

History and Architecture: A Journey Through Time

The origins of the sanctuary are lost in time. A pre-existing chapel to the current building was demolished in 1790, after a period of decline. Three years later, in 1793, a votive pillar was erected, a testament to the perseverance of faith in this place. The building we admire today was constructed between 1845 and 1846, later undergoing a significant restoration and expansion in 1924, carried out by the architect Domenico Tea and the contractor Eugenio Torchio.

The sanctuary’s façade, in neoclassical style, is striking for its simplicity and elegance, topped by a triangular pediment. The interior is characterized by a single rectangular nave leading to an octagonal apse. Once, a centuries-old mulberry tree, linked to local legends, stood near the sanctuary, but unfortunately, it was cut down some years ago.

Once, a statue of the Madonna, 1.20 meters tall, dressed in a sky-blue robe and crowned, was also venerated, but unfortunately, it was stolen in 1989.

Unfortunately, over time, many of these votive objects have been lost, stolen, or sold.
