Although a reference to the 7th century suggests an even more remote origin, based on archaeological assessments, the first documented mention dates back to 1230. The Physician Saints: Cosmas and Damian

Cosmas and Damian, twin brothers of Arab origin, lived in the 3rd century and became famous for their skill in medicine and their unwavering faith. Instead of requesting money for their medical services, they practiced their art free of charge, converting many people to Christianity. For this reason, they are venerated as the Anargyroi saints (from the Greek “without silver”). They suffered martyrdom during the persecutions of Diocletian, becoming symbols of charity, care for others, and testimony of faith. Their fame spread rapidly throughout the Christian world, giving rise to numerous sanctuaries dedicated to them.

A Sanctuary Between Splendor and Abandonment

The sanctuary experienced periods of great religious fervor, as evidenced by the numerous testimonies of ex-votos. Unfortunately, at the end of the 18th century, it suffered a severe blow with the closure ordered by Joseph II. Since then, the sanctuary fell into a long period of abandonment, risking being swallowed by vegetation and oblivion.

Traces of Devotion: The Ex-Votos

Once, the walls of the church were adorned with a rich collection of ex-votos, tangible testimonies of the faithful’s gratitude for graces received. Painted tablets depicting healing scenes, goldsmith objects, prostheses, and various other items filled the sanctuary, creating a vibrant narrative of faith and hope. Unfortunately, much of this precious collection was dispersed at the end of the 18th century. Some objects are now found at the Muri-Gries monastery (Bolzano), in private collections, and, above all, in the nearby church of San Martino di Cologna/Glaning, where the liturgical furnishings and, to some extent, the cult itself were transferred.

Rebirth and Restoration: A New Chapter

Fortunately, in recent decades, thanks to the commitment of enthusiasts and volunteers, the sanctuary has been brought back to light. After almost two centuries of abandonment, the small church has been restored, making it accessible again to the faithful and visitors. This restoration marked the beginning of a new chapter in the sanctuary’s history, a return to its origins and a renewed opportunity for spirituality.

Practical Information

The sanctuary has undergone several structural modifications over the centuries, as evidenced by the inscribed dates (1323, 1331, 1676, 1740) that recall important restoration or expansion works.

In 1328, the parish of San Genesio was subject to the Augustinian canonry of Augia/Gries, which in the 17th century decided to directly oversee the spiritual care of the sanctuary. In that year, the Bishop of Trent granted that Mass could be celebrated periodically there by the parish priest of San Genesio.
