The History of Santa Franca: From Monastic Life to Popular Devotion

The history of the sanctuary is intimately linked to the life of Santa Franca (c. 1175 – 1218). After a period of thirty years spent in the monastery of San Siro in Piacenza, Franca became the superior of the small community of Cistercian Benedictines at Montelana in 1214. Due to the isolation of the place, the community soon moved to Pittolo, still under Franca’s guidance, where the saint died on March 25, 1218. Her tomb became a pilgrimage destination, and Mount Montelana, where she had begun her monastic path, took the name Monte Santa Franca. She was canonized in 1327.

The Sanctuary: A New Building for a Deep-Rooted Devotion

The ancient church of the Montelana monastery, the original site of devotion to Santa Franca, was abandoned at the end of the last century in favor of a new sanctuary, built at an altitude of 1100 meters, on a vast plateau on Mount Franca. This sacred building, with its slender architecture, façade adorned with pilasters, side porticoes, and octagonal dome, bears witness to the continuity of faith and the vitality of the cult of Santa Franca.

Inside the sanctuary, visitors can admire a wooden statue of the Saint, depicted as a Cistercian Abbess, a symbol of her spiritual authority and her guiding role in the monastic community. This artistic artifact, an object of great veneration, invites prayer and reflection on the life of the saint.
