Sanctuary of San Giorgio in Suelli: A Journey Through Faith, History, and Miracles

Nestled in the heart of Sardinia, in Suelli, stands the Sanctuary of San Giorgio, a place steeped in history, deep faith, and testimonies of miracles. Fortunately, there is an edition edited by G. Arca (1598). Other valuable sources are the “Cronica de los sanctos de Sardeña” (1600) by D. Serpi and the “Apodixis sanctitatis episcoporum Luciferi calaritani et Georgii Suellensis” (1609), also by D. Serpi.

A document from 1215 mentions a worker employed in the construction of the sanctuary, a small piece that helps reconstruct the history of this sacred place.

The Miracle of Torchitorio and the Fame of Sanctity

The fame of sanctity of Bishop San Giorgio is closely linked to the miracle of the healing of Torchitorio, Judge of Cagliari, afflicted by the plague. A document preserved in the Archiepiscopal Archive of Cagliari attests to the prodigy. The publication of the document is in A. Solmi, “Le Carte Volgari dell’Archivio Arcivescovile di Cagliari, Florence, 1905.”

The miraculous healing helped spread devotion to San Giorgio, making the sanctuary a destination for pilgrimages and a place of hope for the sick.

Indulgences and Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction

On August 9, 1608, Pope Paul V extended to the church of Suelli the plenary indulgence previously granted (February 18, 1606) to those who visited the church of San Giorgio in Cagliari, located in the Stampace district. A tangible sign of the recognition of the religious importance of the sanctuary.

In 1420, following the union of the diocese of Suelli with the Archdiocese of Cagliari, the sanctuary passed under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Cagliari, by order of Pope Martin V. At the time of its foundation, it fell under the episcopal jurisdiction of Suelli, remaining there until the suppression of the Suelli diocese.

The Care of Souls

The care of souls was entrusted to a priest with the title of provicar, assisted by two priests in his ecclesiastical functions, thus ensuring constant spiritual assistance to the faithful.
