Sanctuary of San Gottardo (at the Nativity): A Treasure of Faith and History in Bagnolo di Po
Nestled in the tranquil countryside of Bagnolo di Po, in the province of Rovigo, the Sanctuary of San Gottardo (formally dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary) represents an important point of reference for faith and popular devotion. This sacred place preserves centuries of history, art, and traditions linked to the figure of San Gottardo, protector against rheumatism and arthritis.
History and Architecture: A Journey Through Time
Although detailed information about the original chapel is not available, it is documented that in 1674 work began on the reconstruction of the current church dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During this work, the chapel dedicated to San Gottardo took on its current form, becoming an important focal point within the sanctuary.
In the 19th century, the altar we admire today was created, completed in 1860. Further restoration work in 1960 involved the entire church, including the chapel of San Gottardo, preserving its beauty and historical-artistic value.
The chapel of San Gottardo, situated on a slightly raised level compared to the main nave, is distinguished by its octagonal shape. The altar is adorned by two pairs of columns with Corinthian capitals, which support a semicircular tympanum decorated with coffers and enriched by a small head in the keystone. At the center, a lunette-shaped niche, framed by relief moldings, houses the precious statue of the saint.
The marble altar frontal is finely decorated with geometric motif friezes, a testament to the skill of the artisans who contributed to the creation of this sacred place.
The Statue of San Gottardo: An Image of Devotion
The statue of San Gottardo, 120 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, is a work of great artistic value. Initially dated to the 16th century, recent studies would more plausibly place it in the 1800s. The saint is depicted standing, dressed in full episcopal vestments complete with episcopal insignia: mitre and crozier. In his left hand he holds a book, a symbol of his wisdom and his role as a spiritual guide.
The Ex-Votos: Testimonies of Faith and Graces Received
Once, the chapel of San Gottardo housed a rich collection of ex-votos, votive offerings donated by the faithful as a sign of thanksgiving for graces received. Unfortunately, this collection has largely been dispersed, but three examples remain that testify to the deep popular devotion.
It is hypothesized that the collection was mainly composed of artifacts made of embossed heart-shaped metal sheet, a type particularly widespread in the area. Popular memory also recalls an ex-voto from veterans of the First World War, consisting of a crystal chandelier, and testifies that “once the walls of the chapel were covered with orthopedic busts and crutches,” bearing witness to the healings obtained through the saint’s intercession.
Today, the few remaining ex-votos are kept at the altar, as a testament to the unwavering faith of the faithful.
Miracles and Legends: An Aura of Mystery and Devotion
Six miracles are attributed to San Gottardo, abbot and bishop of Hildesheim (born in Passau in 960). Popular legend tells that the statue of the saint miraculously arrived from Bavaria, crossing the marshes on a small boat. However, it is more likely that the cult of the saint was introduced by Germanic soldiers who passed through Bagnolo in the 16th century.
Regardless of the origins of the cult, it is certain that the local inhabitants have always invoked San Gottardo as a protector against rheumatism and arthritis, diseases aggravated by the humid climate of the area.
Indulgences and Feast Days: Celebrations of Faith
Tradition holds that an indulgence (the details of which are unknown) is granted for the saint’s feast day, celebrated on May 5th. This occasion represents a moment of great participation and devotion for the local community, which gathers to honor San Gottardo and renew its faith.
An Experience of Faith and Discovery
A visit to the Sanctuary of San Gottardo offers not only an experience of faith and devotion but also the opportunity to immerse oneself in the history and traditions of a territory rich in charm. You could undertake more in-depth research in the parish archives to discover further details about the construction of the chapel or the ex-voto collection. Who knows, you might come across unpublished documents that reveal new aspects of the sanctuary’s life and popular devotion.
Spiritual Adventure: Meditate on the life of San Gottardo in the silence of the chapel, letting yourself be inspired by his example of humility, charity, and service to others.
