The stained-glass windows filter light, illuminating the sacred space. At the end of the nave, a large arch leads into the grotto, the beating heart of the sanctuary.

The Statue of Saint Lucy: A Symbol of Faith

Inside the grotto, there is a rough stone image depicting Saint Lucy, with her eyes on a tray – a reference to her martyrdom – and a pilgrim’s bag slung over her shoulder. The original statue, dating back to the early 1600s, was stolen in 1974. The current statue is a faithful copy, made in 1975, which continues to be venerated by the faithful.

Ex-Votos and Testimonies of Grace Received

The sanctuary houses a rich collection of ex-votos, testifying to the faith and gratitude of pilgrims. Luminaries, inscribed tablets, goldsmith objects, prosthetics, and various items tell stories of graces received and prayers answered since the sanctuary’s foundation.

The legend tells that in the spring of 1600, some shepherds, curious about the behavior of their sheep, discovered a grotto at the foot of Mount Santa Lucia. Entering the grotto, they saw two luminous figures: Saint Lucy and the Archangel Michael. Saint Lucy expressed the desire to be venerated in that place, while Saint Michael offered his protection to the village. The shepherds then found a stone image of the Saint. This miraculous event gave rise to the cult and the construction of the sanctuary.

The figure of Saint Michael the Archangel, associated with the apparition in the sanctuary, adds further fascination to this sacred place. Saint Michael, whose name means “Who is like God?”, is venerated as the leader of the heavenly hosts, protector against the forces of evil, and a symbol of justice and divine strength. His presence in the foundation story underscores the celestial protection over the sanctuary and the community.

A Place of Pilgrimage and Hospitality

After the apparition and the discovery of the image, the grotto became a pilgrimage destination. Work was done to enhance the place: a vault under the boulder, a niche in the rock for the statue, and a gate to protect the entrance. Masses were celebrated only during certain periods of the year, but pilgrims could ask the local hermit to open the sanctuary. Today, thanks to the Marian community Oasi della Pace, the sanctuary is always open and welcoming.

Indulgences and Ecclesiastical Recognition

On May 28, 1989, the Archbishop of Benevento, Carlo Minchiatti, granted a plenary indulgence to the faithful on the anniversary of the sanctuary’s consecration. Subsequently, in 1999, Archbishop Serafino Sprovieri extended the possibility of obtaining the plenary indulgence for the entire Jubilee Year, testifying to the importance of the sanctuary for the spiritual life of the faithful.
