The sanctuary’s architecture reflects the different eras that have shaped its appearance. Originally built in a simpler style, the building underwent two major interventions that altered its physiognomy.

In 1592, the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary promoted a first expansion, leaving as testimony the sixteenth-century stone portal, adorned with carved panels and rosettes on the pilasters. Subsequently, in 1750, the sanctuary was reinterpreted in an eighteenth-century key, with the creation of the façade and the stucco decorations that embellish the interior.

The Sacred Effigy and the Epiphany: The Heart of Marian Devotion

At the center of veneration is a gilded statue from the 16th century depicting the Virgin Mary. According to tradition, in 1614, a small star miraculously illuminated on the statue’s chest, an event that further strengthened popular devotion. This epiphany is one of the pivotal moments in the sanctuary’s history.

The Apparitions and the Figure of the Farmer Floro: A Tale of Popular Faith

The history of the sanctuary is inextricably linked to the Marian apparitions that, according to tradition, took place between May 18th and 20th, 1480. It is said that the Virgin appeared three times to the farmer Floro near the present-day sanctuary. This document, kept in the Municipal Archive, is said to have been lost during the French invasion of 1798-1806. It is said to have contained valuable information about the apparitions, the founding of the sanctuary, and the miracles attributed to the Virgin until the end of the 18th century. Its rediscovery would represent an important opportunity to deepen knowledge of local history and popular devotion.

In the pastoral visits that followed from the 16th to the 19th centuries, some news regarding the apparitions of the Virgin in 1480 and the history of the church of Santa Maria dell’Alno was reported. Furthermore, during the pastoral visit of 1611 by Bishop Giovanbattista Visconti, some miracles were recalled. The search for these ancient testimonies could reveal unpublished and curious details about the life of the sanctuary and the faith of its visitors.

Confraternities and Congregations: The Social Fabric of Faith

The sanctuary has hosted several confraternities and congregations that contributed to its growth and development. In 1582, the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary was founded at the sanctuary, overseeing the first expansion of the building in 1592. In 1633, the Confraternity of the Body of Christ established its headquarters there, and between 1601 and 1623, the chapels of the Conception and the Nativity were built.

From the Pieve of Canzano to Santa Maria dell’Alno: A Passing of the Torch

Originally, the sanctuary fell under the jurisdiction of the pieve church of Canzano, San Biagio, documented since 1283. However, in 1783, with the start of reconstruction work on the church of San Biagio, the rights and duties of the pieve were transferred to Santa Maria dell’Alno, where they remained, as the reconstruction work was never completed.

An Economic Support for Faith: The Rectorship of the Universitas of Canzano

At the beginning of the 16th century, the Universitas of Canzano founded a rectory in S. Maria dell’Alno to ensure the support of a priest who would celebrate religious functions.
